This Act may be called [The Protection of Civil Rights Act] [Substituted by Act 106 of 1976, Section 3, for "the Untouchability (Offences_ Act " (w.e.f. 19.11.1976).] , 1955.

It [extends] [The Act has been extended to the Union territories of- (1) Goa, Daman and Diu by Regulation 12 of 1962 (w.e.f. 26.1.1963). Goa is now a State, see Act 18 of 1987, Section 3 (w.e.f. 30.5.1987); (2) Dadra and Nagar Haveli by Regulation 7 of 1963 (w.e.f. 1.7.1965); and (3) Pondicherry by Regulation 7 of 1963 (w.e.f. 1.10.1963)] to the whole of India.

It shall come into force on such date as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint.
