Whoever commits theft shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.

Section 379 of the IPC has been superseded by Section 303 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) for all offences committed on or after 1 July 2024. The old provision continues to apply for offences committed before that date.
